The Neocatechumenal Way was born in 1964 in the shanty towns of Palomeras Altas, near Madrid (Spain). The environment of the shanty towns was formed by the most degraded layers of society: gypsies and “quinquis” (largely illiterate), homeless, thieves, prostitutes, young criminals, immigrants, etc. In this environment, the seed of the Neocatechumenal Way germinated. Among the poor and marginalized who received the announcement of the dead and risen Christ, Kiko and Carmen how the Holy Spirit started a process of Christian initiation, in the image of the catechumenate of the early Church.

Carmen was, along with Kiko, an initiator of the Way. She was born in Ólvega (Soria, España) on November 24, 1930. Carmen spent two years, from the middle of 1963 to 1964, in the Holy Land with her bible, visitng holy sites. Upon her return to Madrid, she began to work in the shanty towns of the periphery, thinking of going as a missionary to Bolivia with other celibate lay people. However, there she meets Kiko Argüello, who lived in the shanty towns of Palomeras Altas, and decides to stay in the same area. In the midst of the poor, they both discovered the strength of the Paschal Mystery and of the preaching of the Kerygma (the Good News of the dead and risen Christ) and they witnessed the birth of the first community. Thanks to the confirmation of this new reality by the archbishop of Madrid Mons. Casimiro Morcillo, Carmen started to work with Kiko, bringing to parishes, first in Madrid, then to Rome and thereafter to other cities and nations – this work of renewal of the Church.

If humans evolved from other animals, how can we be special, have “spiritual souls” or be made “in the image of God”?
Christians have always understood that human beings are like other animals at the physical level. This is stated very frankly in the Bible: continue reading...

St. Thomas was born in Roccasecca, near Naples, in the bygone years of 1224 or 1225. When he was still very young, he went to live with the Benedictines of Monte Cassino and the family expected that, to honour the noble Aquino lineage, he would eventually become the superior of the famous abbey.
Thomas considered the study of sacred theology as something very important for contemplative life and apostolate. Later, in the Summa Theologica5 he would declare that study illuminates the divine reality and guards against customary errors into which contemplatives unfamiliar with Sacred Scripture fall. He also said that study is necessary for preaching and other similar ministries. Finally, he noted how it serves as a means of penance and purification, since it preserves the soul from lascivious thoughts, mortifies the flesh by the effort it demands, causes love of wisdom to prevail over earthly goods, preventing the coveting of riches, and is an assurance of obedience for those who dedicate themselves to it in virtue of their religious profession.
But God had different plans…
